Empowering Artists Living With A Chronic Illness…

My Art:

I am an impressionist textile artist based on The Canterbury Plains, New Zealand who uses fabric as my painting medium. My work explores the moments in time which satisfy the curiosity in my soul: the myths, the legends and the complex worlds which inspired them.

By layering small pieces of reclaimed or discarded fabric (blended, layered, hand or machine stitched, glued, embellished, fabric collage), I build quiet compositions that capture the moment in time I feel gave birth to the legend, the myth and the story it told.

The work grows out of the feeling that every day occurrences, when surrounded by mystery, give birth to spectacular stories which explain the unknown. I am drawn to the epic legends, and the local myths as a means to understand how the people who lived before me understood their world and how I relate to mine.

My intention is simple: to draw your attention to the everyday magic that occurs all around you, to remind you to look up, look out, look within. The answer you seek is there. I am now extending my work to include more 3D elements inviting the work off the canvas and into the room.

Beyond my art:

I have lived with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (acquired from a misdiagnosis of Ross River Virus, Epstein Barr Virus and Barhmah Forrest Virus as “homesickness” when I was at boarding school) for over 35 years. For many years I lived a life confined to my bedroom or couch.

At the time I was diagnosed, my neurologist told myself and my husband that my illness had the same impact on life as living with a terminal illness, it just wouldn't kill me.

What he didn’t say at the time was: depression, fatigue, guilt and pain would wear me down, making me a likely candidate for suicide.

I learned that the hard way.

It is my intention through my work and training as an RTT® (Rapid Transformational Therapy®) practitioner to support other artists and creatives struggling with the same mental load I was.

Using Marisa Peer’s award winning program -which combines hypnotherapy, neuroscience and the principles of brain plasticity, I now help other artists to discover the root cause of their challenges, address the programming that keeps us trapped in our old patterns and re-program the brain with updated beliefs and habits that supports us in living the life we desire.
